The Department of Chemical Engineering was established under Vignan's Engineering College in the year 1997 to address the phenomenally growing Chemical Industry in India. The department primarily offered Undergraduate (B.Tech) program in Chemical Engineering and later Master's of Technology (Chemical Engineering) in the year 2004.The department has been NBA accredited in the year 2007. Later, it was emerged as an Institute, Vignan's Foundation for Science Technology and Research and was granted the status of "Deemed to be University" in the year 2009.The department has taken several strategic initiatives to fulfill the ever-growing local and global demands in allied chemical engineering streams viz. Textile and Fashion Technology, Food Technology, Petroleum Engineering etc.,. Various undergraduate, postgraduate degree programs and vocational training programs have been launched since its inception.

The B.Tech course in Textile and Fashion Technology was offered by the department in the year 2011, which is one of the most lucrative, appealing, glamorous and exciting career options in today's world. The course offered is one of its kinds and VFSTR is the only Institution offering such a diverse course in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The graduates of Textile and Fashion Technology will have oceans of opportunities in the different areas of Textile and Fashion sectors and be part of the huge transformation the Textile and Fashion Industry is undergoing.
The B.Tech course in Food Technology, started by Department of Chemical Engineering in the year 2014 is a multidisciplinary branch, focusing on understanding the science, technology and engineering, underpinning the behavior of food along the supply chain, and the effects of foods and diet on health. The Food Technology graduates work in the food processing industry and help in developing healthy, high nutrition, safe and convenient food products.
The B.Tech program in Petroleum Engineering was started in the year 2015. The Program aims to provide advanced teaching and lab facilities to the student to enable them to create and apply innovative technologies in Petroleum sector as well as efficiently utilize their knowledge and skills to find of any problems related to petroleum industry. As we seen growing demand of petroleum and their product in India and outside the country is growing continuously as per the demand this program will provide well educated petroleum graduate students. Petroleum Engineering Program is based on integrated approach of relevant basic Science and engineering for Oil & Gas industry operations and application of these knowledge base to Petroleum Exploration, Drilling, Production Reservoir Engineering, Reservoir Simulation, Refining, and Pipeline Operations etc. The course is designed in such way that students get exposure of Upstream, Midstream and Downstream field of Oil & Gas Industry.
On successful completion of the B.Tech program, the students are also guided to pursue higher studies / research in reputed Universities in the country as well as abroad. The School of Chemical Engineering is supported by the Training and Placement Cell, which provides assistance to the students in getting trained in different areas of Chemical Engineering as well as in finding employment with different process industries and research institutes.
