Summary
As part of the Footwear for Health Care initiative under Viksit Bharat 2047 the Department of Biomedical Engineering BME Vignans Foundation for Science Technology and Research VFSTR in collaboration with CSIR Central Leather Research Institute CLRI Chennai organized a technical lecture by Dr G Saraswathy Scientist E Footwear Biomechanics Unit CSIR CLRI Chennai The lecture focused on the prerequisites of gait analysis functional biomechanics and human movement engineering Dr Saraswathy explained the importance of understanding human movement foot structure posture and biomechanics for developing scientifically designed footwear for healthcare applications She discussed how physiological changes during puberty pregnancy postpartum and menopause can influence bone density posture and centre of gravity These changes may contribute to musculoskeletal conditions such as flat feet pronated feet and bowed knees The session emphasized the importance of biomechanically designed therapeutic footwear in preventing long term musculoskeletal problems improving mobility and promoting healthy ageing The lecture provided BME faculty and students with valuable knowledge about the relationship between human biomechanics gait patterns foot health and footwear design The session also provided a strong theoretical foundation for the subsequent gait and footwear data collection activities

About Guest Lecture
The Department of Biomedical Engineering BME VFSTR in collaboration with CSIR Central Leather Research Institute CLRI Chennai conducted a four day National Survey on Footwear for Health Care and Gait Data Collection from 28 July to 31 July 2026 as part of the Viksit Bharat 2047 Initiative The programme involved a systematic assessment of participants through health and lifestyle questionnaires foot anthropometry plantar pressure distribution analysis and 2D video based motion analysis BME faculty researchers and students actively participated in the data collection process and gained practical experience in recording real time biomechanical parameters The initiative aimed to collect essential gait and foot related parameters that can contribute to the development of a comprehensive database for designing ergonomic corrective and healthcare oriented footwear The programme successfully provided hands on exposure to the practical applications of biomechanics and demonstrated the important role of Biomedical Engineering in developing evidence based footwear solutions for improved foot health and mobility The department expressed its sincere gratitude to Dr G Saraswathy Mr Loganathan T and the CSIR CLRI team for their valuable technical guidance and support in conducting the lecture and data collection drive
